WHEN it comes to top-notch naval shipbuilding and ship repair Malaysia, one name stands out - Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad (BHIC). It has emerged as the premier contractor for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).  Its associate, Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) located next to the RMN base in Lumut, Perak undertakes shipbuilding and ship repair of naval vessels.

BHIC is a subsidiary of Boustead Holdings Berhad (BHB) whose largest shareholder is the Armed Forces Fund Board (Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera). Companies under BHIC, whose corporate office is in Menara Boustead in Kuala Lumpur, is involved mainly in heavy engineering activities in the defence, marine and oil and gas industries.  


BHIC is listed on Bursa Malaysia and has three shipyards located in Lumut, Perak, Pulau Pinang and Langkawi. Its key activities are:
  • Building military and commercial vessels
  • Undertaking ship repair on Government, commercial and private vessels
  • Undertaking maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of military assets (including ships, submarines and helicopters) and commercial and private vessels
  • Fabricating structures and modules for the oil and gas industry
  • Undertaking MRO of electronics, electrical and control systems, engines, communication equipment and weaponry
  • Manufacturing of components for the aero industry and propellants
  • Providing Integrated Maintenance and Logistics Support Services to military assets



Main Divisions

1. Defence & Security Division

 

a) Shipbuilding

The principal activity of this division is building naval vessels such as Offshore Patrol Vessels, Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) for the RMN.

BNS is currently building six units of LCS which are frigate-classes vessel that can perform complex naval missions covering four dimensions, namely anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and electronic warfare. It is also building four units of LMS with China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co. at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industrial Group shipyard in Wuhan, China.


b) Ship repair / MRO

BNS has top of the range facilities and skilled, experienced and dedicated workforce to undertake ship repair works and MRO on RMN vessels.

BHIC’s joint venture company, BDNC Sdn Bhd undertakes refit works and provides In-Service Support (ISS) to RMN’s Scorpene-class submarines.
 

c) Manufacturing

Activities under this segment include manufacturing of electronics products and components for industrial, defence and aero industry applications and propellant manufacturing.

 

2. Commercial Division

The business units under this division are principally engaged in shipbuilding, ship repair and MRO of commercial and private vessels.


3. Energy Division

This division is principally engaged in the fabrication of steel structures, platforms and structures for the oil and gas industry, marine engineering, hook-up and commissioning, and other services related to the oil and gas industry.
